SCG Super IQ 4/6/13

Nick, Jimmy, and I attended the Super IQ held at "Thanks for Playing" in Ijamsville, MD.
It was a Standard event; Nick took Bant X-men, Jimmy took B/W Zombies, and I took Bant X-men (a few card differences from the version Nick played.

There were 63 players, so we would have 6 rounds and then cut to a top 8.

Round 1: Ryan with Bant Hexproof.
I have never beaten Bant Hexproof with Bant X-men, as I lack true board sweepers.  In game one, he got out an Avacyn's Pilgrim, then voltroned it up to kill me. It was something like 15/11 First Strike, Trample.
In game two I got out an "Angel of Serenity" to face off against "Geist of St. Traft."  Ryan cast "Stolen Identity" copying my "Angel of Serenity", exiling it, then ciphering "Stolen Identity" onto "Geist of St. Traft".  What a blowout!
0-2

Round 2: Dan with an Omnidoor variant.
Dans; deck revolved around "Alchemists Refuge" to cast instant speed sweepers/exilers then flash in a "Door to Nothingness" to win.  He did this in game one and killed me.  He had something like 4 "Supreme Verdicts", 4 "Terminus", 4 "Oblivion Ring", 4 "Detention Sphere", and 4 "Angel of Serenity".  All being cast at instant speed.
In game two, I was onto his plan and was able to use "Angel of Serenity" to recur things from my graveyard and eventually had enough mana to get 3 "Thragtusks" in play, he finally ran out of removal and I killed him.
These games were VERY grindy and we only got through two of them.
1-1-1

Round 3: Liam with U/W/R Control
Liam had a pretty stock UWR control list.  In game one he cast "Assemble the Legion" on turn 5 and ground me out.  In game two I was able to destroy a lot of his land, forcing a concession.  In game three I did the same, and Liam got a bit mana screwed, he finally drew his 5th land too late.
2-1

Round 4: Joseph with Build-a-Bear (RUG X-men)
Josephs deck was pretty similar to mine in the use of Master Biomancer.  His deck used Red where mine used White.  In game one I got the nut draw into a turn 3 "Angel of Serenity".  In game two I was outraced and pummeled.  In game three we were pretty neck and neck for a while until he cast a "Master Biomancer" and soulbound it to a "Wolfir Silverheart".  He then cast three copies of "Arbor Elf", which all became 7/7.
The resulting two attacks killed me.
1-2

At this point, I drop.  I end the day going 0-2, 1-1-1, 2-1, 1-2 for a combined 4-6-1 ending at 1-2-1.  I am disappointed in my showing, which was very poor.  Cutting the fourth Avacyn's Pilgrim hurt the deck too much.  I am putting him back in.  Doing nothing until turn 4 is abysmal in almost every format.  Meanwhile, I put in a single copy of "Sphinx of Uthuun" and he was awesome in every game I cast him.

Meanwhile, Jimmy scooped to Nick in the Finals to make my deck (Bant X-men) show up on StarCityGames.  Thanks guys!
