FNM 9/21/12 Legacy

I went to FNM last friday at Gotham Comics in Westminster, MD.
In a departure from the norm, they did a Legacy event.

I took the only Legacy deck I own, Maverick.

We played 4 rounds.

Round 1: Rob Eggert with B/W Stoneblade

In game one I got the jump on Rob with an early Knight of the Reliquary.  He had to mulligan fairly low (5 or so).  In game two Rob got out an early Batterskull with Stoneforge Mystic.  I was finally able to stabilize when I cast a Green Sun's Zenith for 5 and grabbing Sigarda (who I had sideboarded in).  I put a Jitte on her and started swinging to gain life and remove Lingering Souls tokens.
(2-0)

Round 2: Jimmy Cannon with Affinity.

Holy shit affinity!  Maverick (at least when piloted by me) seems very vulnerable to fast, aggressive decks.  Jimmy stomped me with Cranial Plating in two games.  I tried to remove attacking Ornithopters with Maze of Ith, but Cranial Plating can be equipped as an instant...
(0-2)

Round 3: Scott with Goblins

With a good draw, I was able to steal a game from Scott, but for the most part, he rolled over me with Krenko and the boys.  I really need to find an answer to Goblins; they really seem to have my number. (unless they get a bad draw)
(1-2)

Round 4: Mike Morgan with Hypergenesis

Combo time!  Hypergenesis is a deck I can beat as long as I can get a functional Knight of the Reliquary going and fetch Karakas to bounce the Legends that Hypergenesis puts into play.  In game one, I won the race with a Forest-to-Green Sun for Arbor Dryad draw.
In game two I was too slow and got beat down.
Game three was a lot closer.  I believe we both Mulliganed ot six.  Mike cast a shardless agent to cascade into Hypergenesis and then laid out Griselbrand and then Omniscience.  I dropped a Wasteland and a Qasali Pridemage.  I had a tapped Knight in play, a few lands (including an untapped Maze of Ith), two pridemages, and a couple of Hierarchs/Oozes/Moms.  I have one card in hand, a card from my sideboard.

Mike casts Emrakul, the Aeons Torn, for free, with Omniscience.  I reveal Mindbreak Trap and exile Emrakul, effectively countering him.  Mike ends his turn and takes his extra one.  His draws nothing of significance.  Griselbrand attacks and is removed from combat by Maze of Ith.  He ends his turn, I give my Knight Protection from Black with Mom (Mother of Runes) and swing for the win.

(2-1)

So, I continue to perform poorly in Legacy, but in my defense, the format is quite difficult and diverse.  There are a lot of good decks. In the end I went 2-0, 0-2, 1-2, 2-1 for a total of 5-5, or a 50% win percentage.

Until next time.
